Jan Nimmo has been travelling regularly to Latin America since 1992. She has travelled extensively throughout Central and Southern Mexico, often to remote villages, documenting the work of popular artist, musicians and popular festivals. She has also made a series of portraits of artist and musicians from all over Mexico. She is interested in how traditions survive in Mexico, very often against the odds.
Jan has also carried out a project in Cuba where she traveled from Havana to Guantánamo interview veteran singers and musicians including Francisco Repilado - "Compay Segundo", Rubén González and Reinaldo Hierrezuelo of the Vieja Trova Santiaguero. Through this project Jan gained an understanding of the different genres embodied in traditional Cuban music and documented the project through writing, field recordings, photographs and woodcut portraits.
Jan has visited Guatemala twice, where apart from her interests in popular culture, she was deeply affected by a country undergoing a so called peace process and which was attempting to recover from the aftermath of a 30 year civil war.
